The ABCs of firework safety
Everyone enjoys a fireworks display – it’s the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion. Most people also know that fireworks can be dangerous if a few basic safety rules aren’t followed. If you’re having fireworks, make sure you know the ABC of fireworks safety:
Always stand well back from a firework, and never return to a lit firework. If you’re in charge of a fireworks display, make sure you keep all spectators a safe distance away from fireworks and bonfires. If in doubt, allow a greater clearance than you think you’ll need.
Be careful with sparklers. Some people think that sparklers are the ‘soft’ equivalent of ‘real’ fireworks, but they can still cause burns and other injuries if used carelessly. Don’t give sparklers to children under 5 years old, hold sparklers at arm’s length and make sure not to wave or point sparklers in anyone’s face.
Carry and store fireworks safely. Don’t ever put them in your pocket (even if unlit), never throw them and keep them in a closed box until they’re ready to be used. If you’re planning to hold your own display and are buying your own fireworks rather than buying a display package from a specialist in quality fireworks, make sure they are BS 7114 certified.
This list of ABCs is a handy one to remember, and also to let children and young people know about at your display. To find out more about fireworks safety, do some research on the firework code – which should help you have an enjoyable and safe experience with fireworks.
